Character building: the fruit of the Spirit and walking in righteousness for purpose
Character Building

THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

The fruit of the Spirit is the visible evidence of God’s presence in a believer’s life. Unlike natural talents or personal effort, these virtues manifested by the Holy Spirit show that a life is aligned with God’s will. The fruit of the spirit is the character forming power of the Holy Spirt in the life of the believer. In fact, the fulfilment of destiny requires a person to have some definite character traits to be effective. Although these character traits are very crucial, some people either don’t know much about them, or they think they are optional. Galatians 5:22–23 lists them clearly, and each one plays a unique role in guiding, shaping, and empowering purpose.

Love

Love is the heartbeat of the Spirit. It is not merely emotion but deliberate, selfless action that seeks the good of others. Jesus exemplified love through every act—healing the sick, comforting the broken, and sacrificing His life for humanity (John 15:13; Matthew 14:14). Love undergirds all purpose; without it, accomplishments can be hollow. In fact, whatever is not done out of love is wasted in the kingdom of God. Jesus taught that all the prophets and the law hang on love. Love is meant to be the driving force of all actions and speech of humans. This is because God is love (1 John 4:8). The key evidence that the spirit of God is operating through a person is the spirit of love that underpins the person’s actions (John 13:35).

Joy

Joy is a deep, abiding delight that comes from God, not circumstances. Even in trials, the Spirit produces joy that sustains and inspires action (John 15:11). Joy fuels perseverance, keeping believers motivated when challenges threaten to derail their mission. The world is full of challenges. It is joy that helps a person navigate the powerful discouraging forces operating on earth. Joy spurs us on to achieve great things. Scriptures say the Joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10). It transforms ordinary tasks into expressions of worship and purpose.

Peace

Peace is the inner calm and assurance that flows from trusting God. Peace is a combination of good health, orderliness and It is more than the absence of conflict—it is a steady confidence that God is in control (Philippians 4:7). Peace anchors purpose, preventing fear or anxiety from disrupting decisions and enabling believers to act decisively in pursuit of their calling.

Patience

Patience is endurance under pressure. It allows believers to remain steadfast when circumstances are difficult or when people test boundaries (James 1:3–4). Patience sustains long-term purpose, helping believers navigate setbacks and delays without losing focus on God’s promises.

Kindness

Kindness is intentional generosity of heart expressed in action. It reflects God’s character by lifting others, meeting needs, and offering compassion (Ephesians 4:32). Kindness opens doors for influence and makes the pursuit of purpose relationally effective.

Goodness

Goodness is moral integrity in action, a consistent commitment to do what is right (Psalm 23:6). It provides a framework for ethical decisions and ensures that purpose is expressed in ways that honour God and bless others.

Faithfulness

Faithfulness is reliability and trustworthiness. It allows others to depend on your word and your actions (Galatians 5:22). Faithfulness sustains purpose by keeping commitments, honouring responsibilities, and reflecting God’s consistent character. Without faithfulness, reliability trembles, relationships break, promises are unreliable and purpose cannot be adequately pursued for a lifetime.

Gentleness

Gentleness tempers strength with humility, creating influence without coercion or force (Philippians 4:5). It is a relational quality that helps leaders, teachers, and servants exercise authority with care, guiding others toward God’s will without harm or pride. Without gentleness, people can easily become tyrants and what was meant to draw people begin to repel them. No matter how great a purpose is, it cannot be successfully accomplished in tyranny and rudeness.

Self-Control

There are many things that can influence a person and throw them off balance. These things may be internal or external. Once a person can be tossed to and fro or can be controlled by external forces, the fulfilment of purpose is highly at risk. Self-control is the Spirit-given ability to govern desires, impulses, and emotions (Titus 2:11–12). It grounds a person on a particular course and makes them reliable for the accomplishment of assigned missions. It is self-discipline. Self-control is essential for fulfilling purpose, as unchecked impulses can derail destiny. Self-control ensures that actions align with calling rather than fleeting feelings.

Why the Fruit of the Spirit Is Essential

The fruit of the spirit, although they are many, still function as one. It is the full bouquet of the character of humans expected by God and enabled by the Holy Spirit. Gifts and abilities alone are insufficient without the virtues that sustain character and relationships.

Where from this fruit?

The fruit of the Spirit cannot be learnt it can only be grown or developed. It is the presence of the spirit of God that leads to the exhibition of these characteristics. Thus, the fruit of the spirit, is evidence that the spirit of God is in someone and that guarantees victory on earth. Each virtue—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—empowers, protects, and sustains purpose.

It is worthy to note that these virtues can be lost as well. There are ways by which these virtues leak out of a person. This means that there should be the consistent refilling of the Holy Spirit to ensure consistent fulfilment of purpose. Join us delve deeper into this fruit.

RIGHTEOUSNESS: WALKING IN GOD’S WILL

Understanding Righteousness

Righteousness is more than moral goodness or rule-keeping. In Scripture, it is living in right relationship with God, aligning our thoughts, words, and actions with His will (Matthew 5:6; Romans 3:22, NKJV). It is the standard God requires, reflecting His character and guiding our purpose. Righteousness means doing what is right flowing from God’s grace.

True righteousness does not come from human effort alone. It flows from faith, obedience, and a life surrendered to the Spirit. It shapes believers into vessels that can fulfil God’s calling effectively and consistently.

The Perfect Example

Jesus perfectly embodied righteousness. Every word He spoke, every miracle He performed, and every choice He made reflected His full alignment with the Father’s will (John 8:29). He resisted temptation, lived with integrity, and honoured God in all things.

For believers, His life demonstrates that righteousness is not legalism, but a Spirit-led way of living. An intentional commitment to act in accordance with God’s purpose rather than human desire.

The Importance of Righteousness

It is important to note that living right is non-negotiable if a person wants to live a life that is pleasing to God and fulfil purpose. This is not because God wants to lord it over people, but because some things simply don’t work when not done right. Everything that works cannot be done anyhow.

Righteous living matters because it:

Aligns Us with God – righteousness emanated from God. Thus, the one who lives righteously is aligned with God and cannot be defeated. In righteous living, our decisions and actions mirror His heart and purpose.

Protects from Sin’s Consequences – life is cause and effect. Anything outside righteousness does not bring good results. Thus, righteousness is the only guarantee of good rewards and the safeguarding of destiny.

Attracts God’s Favor – Scripture shows that righteousness draws blessings and guarantees God’s presence (Psalm 1:1–3). Through righteous living, one gets favour before God and humans

Secures Eternal Impact – Actions rooted in righteousness carry lasting value.

Righteousness as a Pathway to Purpose

To make anything meaningful out of our lives, we must continuously pursue righteousness as a lifestyle. This requires growth in the word of God and the practice of same. Join us pursue righteousness together.
